Application for Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship Student (Research Student Program) Tokyo Tech Recommendation commencing October, 2011


The recipients of Monbukagakusho Scholarship in this program will enroll in Tokyo Tech as research students from October, 2011.

A student with excellent academic achievenemts, and who passes the entrance examination during the Research Student period, may be able to enroll in the Master's or Doctoral Program and extend his/her scholarship period under certain conditions;

- Those who hope to continue to the Master's program at Tokyo Tech, if successfully pass the entrance examination for commencing April 2013 or before, can apply for the extension of Monbukagakusho Scholarship.
- Those who hope to continue to the Doctoral program at Tokyo Tech, if successfully pass the entrance examination for commencing October 2012 or before, can apply for the extension of Monbukagakusho Scholarship also.

In principle, persons who have an official recommendation from a university with an agreement with Tokyo Tech or persons who have an official recommendation from the president or at least from a person who is responsible (ex. director or dean) of a university with bilateral activities with Tokyo Tech can apply for this program.

Please note that
applicants for International Graduate Program (A) from October, 2011 cannot apply for this program.

Major difference between International Graduate Program(A) and Research Student Program;

-Students of the Research Student Program enroll in Tokyo Tech as research students in October 2011.
-Students of International Graduate Program (A) enroll in Tokyo Tech as graduate school students in October 2011.



Eligibility:

1. Persons who are at the graduate level (postgraduate) and coming to Japan from overseas to pursue study are eligible. (Persons who reside in Japan at the time of application are not eligible.)

2. Nationality: Applicant must have the nationality of a country which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. Applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application will not be eligible.

3. Age: Applicant must have been born on or after April 2,1976.

4. Academic Background: Applicant must be a graduate from a Japanese university or have academic ability equal or superior to that of a university graduate. A person will be deemed to have academic ability equal or superior to that of a university graduate, if he/she
(1) has completed or will complete a 16-year school curriculum in a foreign country; or
(2) is or will be aged 22 or older and has taken an individual entrance qualification examination and has been judged by a graduate school as being equal or superior in academic ability to a university graduate.
Note: Eligible applicants include those who otherwise satisfy or will satisfy qualification requirements for admission to a Japanese graduate school.

5. Major Field of Study: Applicant should apply for the field of study he/she studied at the previous university or any related field. Applicant must choose a field on which he/she can receive education and perform research at Tokyo Tech.

6. Health: Applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to pursue study at university.

7. Arrival in Japan: Applicant must be able to leave for and arrive in Japan within the period set by Tokyo Tech, which will be the last week of September and the first week of October 2011.

Note: If Applicant cannot arrive in Japan in the set period, travel expenses to Japan will not be provided by Monbukagakusho. Furthermore, if his/her arrival in Japan is delayed for a considerable period of time, his/her selection may be cancelled.

8. Visa requirement: Selected Applicants must obtain a College Student (ryuugaku 留学) visa prior to his/her arrival in Japan. Applicants who change their resident status to any status other than "College Student" after their arrival in Japan will immediately lose their status as a Japanese government scholarship student.

9. Scholarships will not be awarded in the following cases:
1: The applicant is an
active member of the military or a civilian employed by the military

2: The Applicant is
unable to travel to Japan within the dates set by Tokyo Tech

3: The Applicant was a grantee of a Japanese Government Scholarship in the past will not be selected unless he/she has had at least three years of research or teaching experience after completion of the first scholarship.
This exclusion will not apply to an applicant,
who (i) as a foreign student in Japan received training in the Japanese language and/or Japanese culture at a university and graduated from it,
or who (ii) was a foreign student in Japan under the Japan-Korea Joint Science and Engineering Students Exchange Program.

4: The Applicant is
already the recipient of a scholarship from an organization (including a governmental organization in his/her country of origin) other than the Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology - MEXT).

5: The Applicant applies for MEXT scholarship
through a university other than Tokyo Tech at the same time, or any other scholarship provided by MEXT or JASSO (Japan Student Support Organization); or the applicant, who is now a recipient of a scholarship of those kinds, stays to be so after October 2011.

6: The Applicant is planning to enroll in a Japanese university in the academic year 2011, which starts in April 2011, as a privately funded student and stays to be so after October 2011.


Term of Scholarship:

From October 2011 to March 2013 (18 months)

Note: If a Grantee desires to proceed to a regular graduate program from a Research Student program, or to a Doctoral program from a Master's program, he/she may have the term of his/her scholarship extended upon successful examination by MEXT provided that he/she has outstanding academic achivement that meets certain criteria.
Tokyo Tech Recommendation MEXT students can not proceed to a Master's program or Doctoral program of a university other than Tokyo Tech.


Scholarship Benefits:

1. Allowance: Each grantee will be provided monthly with 155,000 JPY (Research Student), 157,000 JPY (Master's program student), or 158,000 JPY (Doctoral program student). These amounts are subject to change depending upon the annual budget of each year. The scholarship will not be paid to a grantee who takes a leave of absence or is long absent from Tokyo Tech.

Scholarship will be cancelled for a grantee if

1: any of his/her application documents is found to be falsely stated;

2: he/she is in breach of his/her pledge made to the Minister of MONBUKAGAKUSHO(MEXT);

3: he/she is subjected to disciplinary action, such as expulsion or removal from register, taken by Tokyo Tech;

4: it becomes definitive that the grantee will not be able to complete his/her course within the standard course term because of his/her poor academic achievement or suspension;

5: he/she is removed from Tokyo Tech or transferred to other university

6: his/her resident status of "College Student" as provided for in Paragraph 1-4 of Appendix to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act changes to any other status; or

7: he/she is provided with another scholarship (except for a scholarship designated for research expenses).

2. Traveling Costs:

1: Transportation to Japan: Each grantee will be provided with an economy class air ticket from the international airport closest to his/her place of residence to Narita International Airport. Expenses such as inland transportation from his/her place of residence to the nearest international airport, airport tax, airport usage charges, special taxes on overseas travel and travel expenses within Japan will be borne by the grantee (the place of residence of the grantee shall in principle be the address stated in the application form). Air travel from a country other than the grantee's nationality will not be covered.

2: Transportation from Japan: The grantee who returns to his/her home country within the last-payment month of his/her scholarship will be provided, upon application, with an economy class ticket for a flight from Narita Airport to the international airport closest to his/her place of return.
Note: Insurance premiums for travel to/from Japan shall be borne by the grantee. The airport the grantee departs from and returns to must be an airport of the country of his/her nationality.

3: School Fees:
Fees for matriculation, tuition and entrance examination will be paid by Tokyo Tech.


How to apply:

The applicant, at first, has to contact a prospective academic advisor at Tokyo Tech and then take an interview before the deadline. He/She also should obtain approval of a course of study from his/her academic advisor.

Also the applicant has to ask the academic advisor to write a “Letter of Acceptance” (Form; Word file ). The academic advisor needs to fill out the form and submit it to the International Student Exchange Division by the deadline. It will be combined with the applicant's documents for examination.

Each applicant is required to send the following documents to the International Student Exchange Division at Tokyo Tech no later than
November 25, 2010 by postal mail.

Please note that we will not accept any documents delivered after the deadline. And also incomplete application will not be accepted.

1. Completed application form (Form; Word file PDF file ) (Original; not photocopy)
A photograph taken within the past 6 months (4.5×3.5cm) is to be attached to the application form.

2. Field of study and study program (Form; WORD file  PDF file )

3. Official academic record for undergraduate and graduate course (original; not photocopy)

4. Certificate of graduation or expected graduation for undergraduate and graduate course (original; not photocopy)

5. Summary of thesis
If you have not written a thesis, please write and submit the details of your research in your university on any form.

6. Official Score of either TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS (Academic Module) taken within the space of two years before the application date (original; not photocopy). The tests offered under the TOEFL Institutional Testing Program (ITP) or TOEIC Institutional Program are not acceptable.
Applicants whose first language is not English must submit a TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS score.
If you have a score of Japanese Language Aptitude Test, please submit it along with the score of TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS.

7. Recommendation letter from the Dean of the student’s home institution addressed to the president of Tokyo Tech (original; not photocopy)

8. Recommendation letter by the head of department, supervisor, etc. to verify the potential of applicant (Form; WORD file  PDF file )

9. One copy of the applicant's passport (the page showing his/her name and photo)

Note1: Original documents written in another language than English must be accompanied by English or Japanese translations certified by the public institution or the university issuing the original documents.
Note2: The documents once submitted will not be returned under any conditions.
