Those wishing to reside at the International House (IH) are asked to consult their host researcher or host organization regarding the application.
Applicant Eligibility
- Those employed as full-time faculty members at the level of lecturer or above.
- Assistant Professors who are able to receive external funds are also eligible to apply. Such applicants will also be required to provide support for the resident and serve as their contact person. It is recommended to apply for residency jointly with another full-time Science Tokyo faculty member (also lecturer or above) to share the responsibilities.
Note: Applicants are required to serve as a contact person for residents whenever necessary. Although IH staff provide daily support for residents, in some cases we may ask applicants to assist residents in their everyday life and deal with problems that may arise. We may also consult an applicant when, for example, a resident does not pay the cost of restoring their residential unit to its original condition.
Resident Eligibility
- International researchers (including Japanese nationals who have lived outside Japan for a significant period (about ten years or longer), excluding students) who are coming from overseas and engage in education or research at Science Tokyo, and their family members (in principle, limited to spouse and children)
- International researchers (including Japanese nationals who have lived outside Japan for a significant period (about ten years or longer), excluding students) who are coming from overseas to engage in education or research at another national university or national inter-university research institute, and their family members (in principle, limited to spouse and children)
- Any other person approved for residence by the Executive Vice President in charge of International Researcher Housing
In the case of 1, the following conditions apply:
- International researchers must be newly arrived in Japan from overseas with the purpose of engaging in education or research at Science Tokyo.
- International researchers who will be employed as regular faculty members may reside at IH for a maximum of two months, based on the condition that, during their stay at IH, they will look for a long-term residence.
- In principle, international researchers must obtain an on-campus status at the Institute. However, it should be noted that doctoral students from educational or research institutes outside of Japan wishing to reside at IH while they conduct research at the Institute must have Visiting Junior Fellow or an equivalent status. Arrangements for obtaining said status should be made well before the scheduled move-in date.
- The host researcher of a prospective resident must contact the Security Export Control Unit of the International Planning Section at the Office of Strategy and Planning for the security export control on accepting a researcher from abroad. If further procedures are required, please proceed with them promptly. Even if the prospective resident is unable to move in on their scheduled move-in date due to unfinished examination by the Security Export Control Unit, the rent must be paid from the scheduled move-in date.
- If a researcher from abroad is not accepted by the Institute as a result of the security export control examination, the researcher’s reservation of residence will also be cancelled. In that case, a cancellation fee must be paid in accordance with the relevant rules. We ask for your understanding in advance.
