Those wishing to reside at 80th Anniversary Hall Housing are asked to consult their host researcher or host organization regarding the application.
Applicant Eligibility
- Those employed as full-time faculty members at the level of lecturer or above.
- Assistant Professors who are able to receive external funds are also eligible to apply. Such applicants will also be required to provide support for the resident and serve as their contact person. It is recommended to apply for residency jointly with another full-time Science Tokyo faculty member (also lecturer or above) to share the responsibilities.
Note: Applicants are required to serve as a contact person for residents whenever necessary. Although 80th Anniversary Hall Housing staff provide daily support for residents, in some cases we may ask applicants to assist residents in their everyday life and deal with problems that may arise. We may also consult an applicant when, for example, a resident does not pay the cost of restoring their residential unit to its original state.
Resident Eligibility
Single room
- International researchers (including Japanese nationals who have lived outside Japan for a significant period, excluding students) who are coming to engage in education or research at Science Tokyo
- International researchers (including Japanese nationals who have lived outside Japan for a significant period, excluding students) who are coming to engage in education or research at another national university or national inter-university research institute
- Any other person approved for residence by the Executive Vice President in charge of International Researcher Housing
However, the following conditions are attached to item 1 regarding eligibility.
- International researchers who will be employed as regular faculty members may reside at 80th Anniversary Hall Housing for a maximum of two months, based on the condition that, during their stay at 80th Anniversary Hall Housing, they will be looking for a long-term residence.
- Doctoral students from educational or research institutes outside of Japan wishing to reside in the Housing while they conduct research at the Institute must have Visiting Junior Fellow or other relevant status at the Institute. Please make sure to start arrangements for obtaining said status well before the scheduled move-in date.
- If the period of stay is long-term (more than one month), please obtain an on-campus status at the Institute.
- The host researcher of a prospective resident must contact the Security Export Control Unit of the International Planning Section at the Office of Strategy and Planning for the security export control on accepting a researcher from abroad. If further procedures are required, please proceed with them promptly. Even if the prospective resident is unable to move in on their scheduled move-in date due to unfinished examination by the Security Export Control Unit of the International Planning Section at the Office of Strategy and Planning, the rent must be paid from the scheduled move-in date. If a researcher from abroad is not accepted by the Institute as a result of the security export control examination, the researcher’s reservation of residence will also be cancelled. In that case, a cancellation fee must be paid in accordance with the relevant rules. We ask for your understanding in advance.

In the case of item 2, application forms must be submitted through the president (or proxy) of the national university or national inter-university research institute with which the researcher will be affiliated.
Executive suite
- International researchers (including Japanese nationals who have lived outside Japan for a significant period, excluding students) at Science Tokyo
- Any other person approved for residence by the Executive Vice President in charge of International Researcher Housing
- The family members (in principle, limited to spouse and children) can also reside.
However, the following conditions are attached to item 1 regarding eligibility.
