Before leaving Japan, you must complete the appropriate procedures at both Science Tokyo and your local municipal office to avoid being charged for services, pension or insurance premiums after your leave. Below is a list of general procedures you may have to perform before leaving Japan.
Procedures at Science Tokyo
- Return your staff ID card and your health insurance card to the Human Resources Division
- Submit documents for withdrawal from the Mutual Aid Association to the Human Resources Division. If applicable, these documents will be sent to you by the Human Resources Division, Employee Benefits Group.
- Return your access card to the respective department
- Backup any important emails in your Science Tokyo email account
- Return all items belonging to the Institute
Procedures at Your Local Municipal Office
- Submit a Moving Abroad Notification
- Withdraw from National Health Insurance
- Withdraw from National Pension System (if applicable; those covered by the Federation of National Public Service Personnel Mutual Aid Associations will withdraw through the Human Resources Division instead.) (see Pension)
- Determine necessary procedures for settling any unpaid resident tax
- Return/update your Notification Card and Individual Number Card (see Social Security and Tax Number System)
Procedures at the Airport
- Return your Residence Card
Other Procedures
- Close your accounts with telephone, electricity, gas, water, and other utility companies
- Close your Japanese bank and credit card accounts
- Dispose of any large trash by purchasing disposal tickets and following appropriate procedures
