Guide for International Researchers | Science Tokyo

MENU

International researchers employed at Science Tokyo will typically need a Japanese bank account to receive their salary. However, a foreign national may not be able to open a resident bank account depending on the length of stay. Those who do not have an appropriate bank account will be paid in cash or by overseas remittance.
For details, please see the following:

  1. Your period of stay is less than 3 months
You are not able to open a bank account as you do not have a resident card, which is required for account opening.

  2. Your period of stay is 3 months or more and less than 6 months
You can open a bank account. However, in principle, you can only open a non-resident deposit account, which is not appropriate for direct deposit. In this case, you may be able to open an account appropriate for direct deposit by informing the bank that you work or will work at Science Tokyo. Please contact a bank to find out how to apply.

  3. Your period of stay is 6 months or more
You can open a bank account for direct deposit. Please be reminded that those who do not have an appropriate bank account will be paid in cash or by overseas remittance.

Also, researchers leaving Japan permanently will need to keep their designated bank account open until the final salary payment.
